Why is knowing Media Literacy Relevant to Daily Life?

Screen Time and Age

Screen time among younger children continues to grow with their age. When a child reaches school age around 5 years old they are on screens for about 2 hours a day. Additionally, screen time then jumps up to about 6 hours a day between ages 8 and 12.

There is a high prevalence of Chromebooks being used in classrooms today. Google recently announced that there are over 50 million Chromebooks in schools being used by students and educators. This number means that a large number of students have access to media during school via their Chromebooks that the school provides. With this many students having access to online media it is crucial that we educate our students on how to properly use technology and understand the literacy in media.

Screen Time Tips

Screen time is incorporated into everyday use in the classroom. Students younger and younger are being exposed to technology prior to the classroom and while learning in the classroom. It is important for students to be literate in the media they are exposed to.
